Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said women’s empowerment through entrepreneurship and liveability has gained momentum in the last decade, highlighting a 28 per cent rise in the number of women pursuing higher education during the period.
Presenting the interim budget for 2024-25, she said that Mudra Yojana loans of Rs 300 crore have been given to women entrepreneurs.
“Female enrolment in tertiary education has increased by 28 percent over a decade. In STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses, girls and women make up 43 percent of enrolments, one of the highest in the world,” the minister said.
“Women empowerment through entrepreneurship, livelihood access and dignity has gained momentum in the last decade,” the minister said, adding that all these measures are reflected in increased women’s participation in the workforce.
“Women’s dignity has been enhanced by outlawing triple talaq, reserving one-third of seats in the Indian Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women and giving at least 70 per cent of rural housing to women as sole or joint owners under the PM Auas Yojana,” she added.
