Islamabad:
Islamabad Margalla College F-7/4 hosted an awareness raising programme on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment organised by International Governance and Sustainability Institute (IG-SI).
The event was enthusiastically attended by many young female students, demonstrating a strong interest and commitment to an important subject.
Dr. Sultan Azam Temuri, Founding Director & CEO, IG-SI delivered an insightful address where he highlighted that despite women making up 49.6% of Pakistan’s population, Pakistan ranks 142nd out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2023.
This disparity highlights a major challenge, particularly the lack of quality education and skills development among the youth bulge, who make up 64 percent of the population.
Dr. Temuri highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was unanimously affirmed by a National Assembly resolution in 2016.
He urged focused efforts on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG-5), which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. He stressed the importance of closing the gender gap through strengthening education and expanding economic participation.
In her speech, Dr. Temuri shared national and international examples to identify effective strategies towards gender equality. In particular, she discussed police gender strategies that have been successful both at the national and international levels.
The programme emphasised the urgent need to address gender disparities in Pakistan and highlighted the critical role of education and empowerment in achieving a more equitable society.
Former UN Police Commissioner and former Inspector General of Police, Helena Iqbal Sayeed, shared her experiences and advised young students to focus on their studies and maintain a simple lifestyle. She stressed the importance of education and skills development.
Former Turkish police officer and UN peacekeeper Esin Gulsen delivered a virtual message to the students. She inspired them with her life story. She explained that by empowering women, Pakistan can be empowered.
Ms. Aisha Kiani, Principal, Margalla College F-7/4 concluded the programme by thanking the guest speakers.
