The report, produced by UN Women and UNDP, highlights the global challenges facing women and provides a roadmap for targeted interventions and policy reforms. The report introduces two new indicators:
The Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) measures women’s choices and freedoms. The Global Gender Equality Index (GGPI) assesses gender gaps in key dimensions of human development.
Combining these indicators allows for a comprehensive assessment of a country’s progress in achieving gender equality.
Today, low women’s empowerment and widening gender gaps are the norm. Less than 1% of women and girls live in countries with high women’s empowerment and low gender gaps. Globally, women achieve, on average, only 60% of their potential, as measured by the WEI, and achieve, on average, 28% less than men in key human development dimensions, as measured by the GGPI.
These disparities have adverse effects not only on women’s well-being and advancement, but also on human progress.
Ahead of the global SDG Summit in September, which aims to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the two indicators will provide crucial evidence needed to achieve the SDGs, including SDG 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls).
