The suspect fired shots at officers, who returned fire and then retreated.
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio Police Department officer was shot early Sunday while responding to a domestic violence call on the city’s north side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
SAPD responded to the 1300 block of Patricia Drive, near Blanco Road, just after 3 a.m. on a report of an assault.
When officers arrived at the apartment, they found the suspect’s girlfriend had been assaulted inside the apartment. According to Chief McManus, when officers entered the apartment they found the suspect lying on the bed with a rifle at his side. The suspect fired shots at officers, who returned fire and then retreated.
“One of our officers was shot multiple times,” Chief McManus said. “She is currently undergoing surgery at the hospital.”
The victim and suspect in the assault are both in their 20s.
“SWAT teams entered the apartment and found the suspect deceased,” Chief McManus said. “It is unclear whether the suspect took his own life or was killed by officer-involved bullets.”
All three officers involved in the shooting had been with the police force for less than three years.
The chief says this is all preliminary information and subject to change.
This is the 14th shooting involving an SAPD officer this year and the first in which an SAPD officer was shot since the Alta Puerta incident in October 2023. At the time, the suspect was firing shots at police from the second floor of a residence.
This is a developing story.
