COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Saturday morning the City of Columbia and the nonprofit organization SisterCare made a splash to stop violence. SisterCare’s Saturday Dunk Tank fundraiser returned to Soda City Market to raise funds for support services fighting domestic violence.
“This is a fun and unique way to not only raise funds for SisterCare and the domestic violence victims we serve, but also to raise awareness of the very important issue of domestic violence,” said Leah Wicevic, SisterCare executive director.
Saturday’s fundraiser was the first of three events the city of Columbia will host in 2024 in partnership with SisterCare.
Starting in 2023, the nonprofit will use dunk tanks at Soda City Markets to help raise funds for its work supporting victims of domestic violence and their families through counseling, shelter and other initiatives.
“We will use the funds to provide comprehensive, wrap-around services, including emergency shelter, clinical counseling and housing for survivors and their children in our community,” Wicevich said.
More than 82,000 South Carolina residents are victims of domestic violence each year, according to a study by the Jamie Kimball Foundation, and the state ranks in the top 10 in the nation for domestic violence-related murders of women.
Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook says that’s why it’s even more important to support the movement to stop the violence.
“We consistently rank very highly nationally when it comes to domestic violence-related issues,” Holbrook said. “Raising awareness of these issues and partnering with amazing advocacy organizations like SisterCare is very important to us.”
If you don’t get a chance to dunk someone this Saturday, don’t worry: The Dunk Tank Fundraiser will return to Soda City Market again on August 24, 2024. The City of Columbia is planning to hold its final Dunk Tank Fundraiser of 2024 on September 7, 2024.
