YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan has signed the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP), highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace. Established by UN Women and the UN Global Compact, the WEP provides guidance to companies on how to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, the marketplace and the broader community.
“Implementing the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles will add further momentum to the work Nissan has done to advocate for women in the workplace,” said Makoto Uchida, president and CEO. “It helps us be as equitable and inclusive as we are diverse. Nissan has a moral responsibility to reflect the world we want to live in, combine diverse insights and understanding, and drive innovation that enriches people’s lives. We will continue to uphold our responsibilities and invest in initiatives that will benefit future generations. This signing demonstrates our commitment.”
Nissan has long supported initiatives to give women a platform in traditionally male-dominated industries. This includes female-specific human resource development initiatives, female leadership programs and frameworks to support women in balancing work and childcare or elderly care responsibilities. As a result, Nissan’s global ratio of female managers has increased from 6.7% in 2008 to 15.5% as of March 2023. In Japan, the average ratio of female managers in manufacturing companies with more than 1,000 employees is 5.1%, but at Nissan, 10.4% of managers are female*.
Nissan continues to strengthen its efforts to create a workplace where employees feel valued and respected for their presence and contributions. It also expands its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to support and foster communication among all employees. Nissan is committed to becoming a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive company, where everyone can bring their best selves to work.
