The Modi government is working to empower rural women not just by providing them with loans and subsidies but also new technologies to boost their self-confidence, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday. She was addressing a gathering of FICCI’s women’s wing Flow in Bengaluru.
“Thanks to government programmes, today the talent for innovative activities is not only being endowed to women in big cities but also in remote areas across the country,” she said. Referring to the government’s recently launched “NaMo Drone Didi” initiative, which trains women to fly drones in villages to spray pesticides and fertilisers on crops, she said teaching women a skill that even men do not use is a big step in boosting their confidence. “Women have responded to this and other similar government initiatives with unbridled enthusiasm,” she added.
Lauding women’s resilience amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister said many have turned the pandemic crisis into a huge opportunity. “Many women have started cloud kitchens, written books, started podcasts and have entered the retail investment market with fervor,” the Minister added. The past few years have seen a significant increase in women’s participation in the workforce, increased savings outside of the post office and women’s presence in consumption of tech products that promote skills, the Minister said.
The minister said empowerment is not a one-time solution but a challenge that has to continue for generations. “It’s a constant challenge to maintain the uplift because after some time, in every skill, in every field, there is a decline, ” she added. She praised Flow, saying the platform is ideally positioned to empower women within and outside its ecosystem. “If people are given the opportunity, they will leverage it and achieve great success. Government programs help, but it is Flow’s continuous support here that is making the movement possible,” she added.
