Paying tribute to the power of tradition, craftsmanship and women empowerment, the Kumudini Flash Fashion Show was held on 8th March 2024. This special event, held to coincide with International Women’s Day, not only showcased an exotic seasonal fashion collection but also reinforced the ethos of Kumudini Handicraft, which stands for care and empowerment, especially for women.
Meticulously planned and executed, the fashion show served as a platform to celebrate these values through the art of traditional and contemporary fashion techniques. The flash fashion show was quite different from the catwalk shows we are used to seeing and it lacked the glitz and glamour of runaway shows. Rather, the show highlighted the meticulous craftsmanship of rural artisans.

This emphasis not only showcased Kumudini’s dedication to sustainable and ethical fashion but also highlighted Bangladesh’s rich cultural heritage. The fashion show was divided into different districts, each dedicated to showcasing a unique aspect of Kumudini’s fashion line.
The journey began with block printed, tie-dyed and naturally dyed outfits highlighting the serene colours that come from Mother Nature’s abundance, followed by a spotlight on Cotton and Nakshikantha, celebrating the revival of traditional Kantha handicrafts that have been modernised whilst preserving their rich traditions.
As the event progressed, the audience was treated to an elite collection of silk and half-silk pieces done with both natural dyes and contemporary acid prints, showcasing the fusion of traditional techniques with modern fashion demands. The show culminated with a focus on Jamdani, an art form that embodies the revival of traditional textile crafts and textiles.
The participation of students and staff from Kumudini’s educational and health institutions, international students and local residents highlighted the inclusive nature of the event. This collaborative effort demonstrated the organization’s commitment to community and empowerment.
The Kumudini Flash Fashion Show was characterised by the integration of cultural elements and a tribute to the legacy of Ranada Prasad Shah, founder of the Kumudini Welfare Trust. Through traditional music, Indian cuisine and the participation of Shah’s descendants, the event created a deep connection with the audience and reminded them of the lasting impact of Shah’s philanthropic work.
The show ended with an acknowledgement of the key contributors who helped make the event happen, from the make-up artists and sound technicians to the choreographers and overall programme advisor Bibi Russell, a respected figure in the international fashion world as a mentor and mentor, making the event a celebration of the teamwork and dedication behind the scenes.
Kumudini Handicrafts is more than a fashion brand, it is a movement to revive and preserve the traditional craft of weaving in Bengal. Named after the sacred lotus, Kumudini symbolizes purity, resilience and the blossoming of potential despite all odds. This symbolism is well reflected in their clothing line.
