Recently, a netizen shared an old video of Jaya Bachchan’s appearance on “What The Hell Navya,” in which she spoke about women empowerment along with Navya Naveli Nanda and Shweta Bachchan. “I remember when I quit working, people said, ‘Oh, she sacrificed her career for marriage and kids’. But that wasn’t the case. I was very happy being a mother and a wife. I enjoyed that role more than the work I was doing in films, which was repetitive. It wasn’t a sacrifice at all.”

Adding to Jaya’s comments, Navya also said that women empowerment is thought to only relate to women fighting for their careers. However, she added that women who choose to be housewives rather than CEOs of companies should not be looked down upon. To this, the veteran actress added:
“So, today, whether it’s me, you, Shweta or any other woman that we interact with, we have a voice because our mothers gave it to us.”
As soon as the video was shared on Reddit, netizens were quick to react. They flooded the comments section of the post, accusing Jaya of being biased towards her husband Aishwarya Rai. “Remember when Aish said she likes them because they listen to her? So the only ones left independent are her, her daughter and granddaughter?” one user commented. Another pointed out, “Aish had the option to be a housewife or an actress. Is this because she chose to work after raising Aaradhya and that’s what caused the problems between them?”

In 2007, while appearing on the popular talk show Koffee With Karan, Jaya Bachchan was asked if she had discussed the issues with her wife Aishwarya Rai after their daughter Shweta Bachchan got married. To everyone’s surprise, Jaya praised Aishwarya, noting that despite being a successful diva, she maintained a down-to-earth attitude. Jaya was quoted as saying:
“She’s adorable. I love her. I always have. I’ve never seen her pushy when we’re all together. I love that about her. She’s quiet, she listens, she takes it all in. And the other great thing is that she fits in so well with the family. She knows who our good friends are.”
