A Venezuelan national living in the United States unlawfully shot a Texas police officer multiple times early Sunday morning after the officer responded to a domestic violence call, according to reports from the San Antonio Police Department and Fox News.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said three officers responded to an apartment around 3:15 a.m. Sunday on a report of a domestic violence incident.
Chief McManus said when officers arrived on scene they learned the female victim had been assaulted by her boyfriend.
When police found the suspect lying in bed with the rifle next to him, he fired shots at three officers, who returned fire, police said.
One female San Antonio Police officer was shot multiple times and taken to the hospital for surgery.
The suspect was found dead in his apartment after the shootout, but San Antonio’s police chief said it was unclear whether he took his own life or was killed by police return fire.
Multiple law enforcement officials told Fox News that the male suspect is a Venezuelan national and was arrested by Border Patrol in November 2023 after illegally entering the country in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Illegal immigrant Jorge Chacon Gutierrez, 25, has been released in the United States and his trial is scheduled for April 2026, sources told Fox News.
