NOLANVILLE — The City of Nolanville has presented its Spirit of Nolanville Award to local resident Amber Gill for helping raise awareness of domestic violence in the community.
City Council Member Karishma Talbot nominated Gill for the award.
“Since 2019, Amber has helped 30 people escape domestic violence,” Talbot said. “She does it all out of her own pocket, spending a lot of money and risking her own safety to help women and anyone get out of violent situations. We thought she was the right person to bring some attention to our community and let people know that organizations and services like this exist here.”
Talbot said Gill accepts donations but does not ask for anything in return from those he helps.
“This is a story we want to hear in our community,” said Nolanville Mayor Andy Williams. “The reason we can say our city is a great place to live is because we have a caring community, so I want to thank you all for your efforts.”
Gill gave a short speech after receiving the award, thanking the council for listening to her and speaking about her organization.
“I made a little silly video about what I’ve done and what I did to escape domestic violence, and I never thought anyone would see it. I was so happy that people were speaking out about something that a lot of people don’t want to talk about,” Gill said. “Violence doesn’t always have to be physical violence, and it doesn’t just happen to women, it happens to men too. I’m so grateful to live in a city that cares about its citizens.”
