FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) – Saturday morning, Applebee’s in Frankfort hosted a breakfast fundraiser for Faith Newsom.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Faith was riding on the back of a motorcycle when she was struck by her then-boyfriend, Brenden Cummins. She was thrown from the bike and pinned under his vehicle. Faith suffered a crushed pelvis, a collapsed lung, multiple fractures and an amputated leg.
Speaking to WKYT from the hospital, Faith said this was the worst attack she’s had so far, but not her first.
Cummins pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal assault (domestic violence) on April 30. A judge ordered Cummins to stay away from Faith, but Faith was attacked again less than a month later, on May 19.
Now, Faith’s family and friends continue to tell her story in the hopes that lawmakers will listen.
“Domestic violence is horrible, especially what Faith went through, and we wanted to support her,” said Veronica Cosenza, a friend of the Newsom family. “We’re also working on a bill to send to the governor to change the law.”
Cosenza said she believes Kentucky’s domestic violence laws should be stricter.
