Men’s Role in Women’s Empowerment (Dorothea Arndt, Hand in Hand and Ravi Verma, ICRW)
The United Nations estimates that at the current rate of progress, it will take 300 years to achieve complete gender equality. People have been working hard to achieve gender equality but the results have not brought about enough change. Is including men in gender empowerment one solution?
The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Hand in Hand and Cartier Charities joined forces to better understand what it takes to help men and women.
In some parts of the world, people face different challenges. Women’s role is considered to be mainly at home, visiting friends and earning money, at the discretion of their husbands. Very few people in these areas work in the formal economy and they live on less than $2.15 a day. The only way out of poverty is through small-scale entrepreneurship. Hand in Hand focuses its work on these areas.
This podcast delves into the data to uncover the impact of men’s and women’s engagement in achieving gender equality. Three years ago, Hand in Hand partnered with ICRW and Cartier Philanthropy to launch an ambitious new project to change the norms and attitudes that hold back women entrepreneurs in rural Arusha, Tanzania. Today, we hear from social impact pioneers Dorothea Arndt and Ravi Verma about what they’ve learned from this work.
Dorothea is CEO of Hand in Hand International, a global network of charities that helps women start their own businesses and lift their families out of poverty. Over the past 20 years, Hand in Hand has supported 4.2 million businesses and created 6 million jobs.
Dr. Ravi is Director of ICRW Asia and has over 30 years of experience in program research and evaluation in Asian countries on family planning, reproductive health, gender mainstreaming and HIV/AIDS.
Ravi and Dorothea bring together their vast experience and expertise to work towards achieving lasting gender equality. Together, they emphasize the importance of engaging men and communities in women’s empowerment. They share practical learnings from their work and research, with a particular emphasis on the economic impact of gender dynamics.
