Today, GRAMMY®-nominated dancehall sensation Spice unveiled “Ex Boyfriend,” the third single and music video from her highly anticipated album, Mirror 25, set for release on August 9, 2024.
This powerful single blends Spice’s influential dancehall sound with a unique pop fusion to create a captivating sound matched with a powerful message. Written by Spice and produced by Spice Official Entertainment, “Ex Boyfriend” showcases Spice’s powerful delivery and delivers a catchy hook that is sure to be a smash radio hit around the world. The rhythm track was recorded at Ireland Recording Studios, written by Karon “Yow Levite” Young and mastered by Redboom Super Mix.
This captivating new single is the perfect mantra for female empowerment as Spice uses her artistic influence to address issues such as domestic violence and negative relationship outcomes. The song is accompanied by a music video directed by Ruggiz Supreme, which tells the story of Spice’s struggle to realise her own self-worth whilst fighting for her cheating boyfriend, ultimately leading to her breaking up with her abusive ex-boyfriend.
“This song is important to me because it creates an important dialogue for women to value themselves and not compromise themselves,” says dancehall queen Spice. “I wanted to remind women that it’s okay to have an ex if there are red flags in their current relationship, including domestic violence and emotional abuse. After 25 years in music, it’s been very important to me to advocate for women’s liberation and strength.”
“Topics surrounding domestic violence and emotional abuse in relationships are difficult conversations that no one wants to talk about. I have been involved in domestic violence before and I walked away without hesitation. I want women to feel comfortable singing this song because with the same intention, they know it’s that easy to walk away from a toxic relationship and move on.”
“We are seeing more and more images shared in the news and on social media of women being subjected to and succumbing to domestic violence. This is an alarming issue. I want my viewers and my close friends to watch this video and understand the reality that sometimes happens between certain couples, and that you don’t have to put up with violence in your relationship. I want to be a voice that empowers women to leave toxic relationships.”
