The Canadian High Commission in Sierra Leone is pleased to launch its annual call for proposals for the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
The CFLI is a program designed to support small, high-impact projects in developing countries that are aligned with Foreign Affairs Canada’s thematic priority areas. The program targets projects that are primarily conceived and designed by local partners. Projects are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian Embassy or High Commission. By building contacts and supporting local initiatives, the CFLI also supports positive bilateral relations between Canada and host countries and their civil society.
Thematic PrioritiesAll projects must align with at least one of the following CFLI thematic priorities:Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment. Focus on preventing violence against women and girls. Proposed projects aimed at supporting the implementation of Sierra Leone’s Gender Equality Act will be considered.Funding InformationThe average CFLI donation is between 25,000 and 45,000 Canadian dollars. All projects must be completed by February 28, 2025, from the date of signing of the donation agreement.Who can apply?Eligible recipients include local non-governmental organizations, community organizations, non-profit organizations, local academic institutions working on local projects, international non-governmental organizations working on local development activities, intergovernmental, multilateral, and regional agencies, organizations, and institutions working on local development activities, municipal, regional, and national government agencies in recipient countries working on local projects, and Canadian non-governmental organizations and non-profit organizations working on local development activities. The majority of CFLI funding goes to local civil society organizations (including non-governmental organizations) and other institutions operating at the local level. Other organizations, such as international, intergovernmental, multilateral, and regional organizations, can only receive funding if they work with local partners on local projects that align with the CFLI’s objectives. Similarly, municipal, regional, and national government agencies can only receive funding if their projects are local in nature. The CFLI is always looking to fund innovative projects that deliver measurable results. The GBA requires applicants to: Consider how women, girls, men, and boys are affected by the issue the project addresses, while ensuring that the project does no harm; Consult women and girls when developing project proposals; and Ensure that the views of those women and girls are reflected in the design of the project. Ineligible The following costs are not eligible for CFLI funding: Nuclear technology and facilities, support to military or paramilitary organizations, gifts, luxury items, direct financial support to governments, seed funding and/or microfinance, core funding or recurring expenses of an organization. Expenses incurred before the signing of the Donation Agreement or after the deadline for signing the Donation Agreement.
