The U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through its Public Diplomacy Section, is pleased to announce a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Women’s Empowerment Small Grants Program.
The program supports NGOs’ efforts to ensure women’s equal participation in the economy, civic and political life of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Proposals that go beyond raising awareness to spur action or generate behavioral or institutional change will be particularly competitive. Proposals that build solidarity among women from different cities, political parties and ethnic groups and support vulnerable and marginalized women in Bosnia and Herzegovina will also be encouraged.
Program Objectives
The program aims to achieve women’s active participation and fair treatment in all spheres of life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including politics, economy, academia, and civil society. The program also aims to prevent gender-based violence and all forms of discrimination and abuse against women, and to support community-based projects that improve the quality of life for women in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Projects must address one of the following themes: Promoting women’s participation in the economic life of Bosnia and Herzegovina in business, arts, law, education, health, science, or other fields. (Proposals cannot include vocational training.) Promoting women’s political participation and increasing women’s voice and leadership on issues affecting the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Increasing the potential of girls and young women to become leaders in their schools, communities, and countries; Preventing gender-based violence and all forms of abuse against women, including sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace; Strengthening support from institutions and civil society for victims of gender-based violence and discrimination; Strengthening civil society and organizing grassroots projects that bring women together across social divides and improve the quality of life for women in their local communities and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Participants and Spectators
Women entrepreneurs, politicians, artists, students, civil society, media, government, victims of domestic violence and any form of discrimination against women, health professionals, civil society activists, etc. Civil society organizations, especially from small and remote communities, are encouraged to apply for this program.
Eligibility Criteria
Non-governmental, non-profit organizations (including think tanks, civil society organizations, and non-profits), educational institutions, and independent media organizations that are based in Bosnia and Herzegovina and legally registered are eligible to apply. Organizations and individuals from the U.S. or other donor countries are not eligible for grants under this program. Grants are generally awarded only to organizations. Organizations may submit only one proposal per program.
