Registration opens Monday for free women’s empowerment camp in Modesto

Today. Just in the news this morning, the Modesto Fire Department is giving young women the opportunity to explore a career in firefighting. They’re partnering with Modesto Junior College to do a one-day training. It’s scheduled for October. Registration opens today and we have Molly, a firefighter, here this morning. She’s here to talk to you guys about this in more detail. Good morning. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you, Brandi. It’s an honor to be here. This is the first time you guys have done anything like this. Why was it important to create this program? Well, the fire department has 3% of its workforce as women. We wanted to give young women an opportunity to broaden their horizons and empower them to think about what their future could be with a career in the fire department. What does it mean to you to be able to participate in something like this and really encourage young women to pursue this as a career? Well, the young women that came that day had the opportunity to travel around California and attend camps with other fire departments. And I see young women who didn’t think they could do it walk out of there full of confidence, knowing that they can do it, that they belong. Giving young women that opportunity is like me walking out encouraged and empowered. Now, tell anyone who’s interested, or family, what they can experience. This is a day where they can experience what it’s like to be a firefighter. So, they can participate. They can climb an aerial ladder, they can climb out of a window. They can pull a fire hose. They can interact with women from other fire departments across California, and they can watch a car get cut off and someone get rescued from it. And, um, they get to have an empowering experience of a career opportunity as a firefighter. So when they said rope climb out of a window, both Chief Doug and I were like, oh, I want to try that. Okay, well, that’s not for us, but what are the requirements? What is the age to participate and what do I need to do to participate? It’s for young women between the ages of 14 and 21. They get to develop their active agility skills. All you need is the willingness to come and perform and see what you can do. There is no fee to attend, but you do need to register. How do I register? If you go to our social media, Modesto Fire social media, you will find a registration link. Or you can register on the Modesto Junior College website. You do need to register.
