The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha national executive member and Manjeshwaram block MP ML Ashwini as its candidate in the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency for the next elections. Despite the presence of veteran candidates from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF), Ashwini is determined not to give up on his quest to bring about change and development in Kasaragod.
What do you think about running for office?
Initially, my candidature came as a surprise. I believe my work as a block panchayat member clearly contributed to the party’s decision. I see this opportunity not only as a testament to the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, but also as a mandate from my party to bring about positive change in Kasaragod.
After your marriage, you moved to Kasaragod from Bangalore. How connected are you with the people of this area?
My closeness to the people and their problems has given me a deep understanding of local dynamics. Moreover, I was elected from Kadambar constituency, which certainly highlights the effectiveness of grassroots efforts in addressing the needs of the community.
The BJP’s presence is limited to a limited number of areas compared to the LDF and UDF, what will be your strategy to reach out to the voters?
My strategy will be to take the message of progress and development directly to my constituents and highlight the need for a representative who can effectively address the district’s long-standing challenges.
This will be your first election in Lok Sabha and you will be competing against experienced candidates from both the LDF and UDF.
While my opponent boasts of his experience, it is essential that he recognises the widespread voter disillusionment with traditional politics. Both the LDF and UDF have failed to deliver on their promises and the people are yearning for change. I bring a fresh perspective and a genuine commitment to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
Minorities in the constituency have supported the LDF and UDF in elections. Do you expect them to support the BJP, especially given their efforts towards implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)?
“The BJP has garnered support from minority groups in Kasaragod, which reflects the inclusiveness of our policies and programmes. The fears surrounding the CAA are unfounded and attempts to stoke fear are misguided. Our priority is to cater to the genuine needs and aspirations of all sections of society, irrespective of religion or culture.
Are developments in the health and education sectors key issues in this election?
The lagging health and education sectors in Kasaragod highlight the urgent need for comprehensive reforms. My priority is to establish a robust health infrastructure, including by setting up an All India State Institute of Medical Sciences in Kasaragod. Similarly, I am committed to expanding educational opportunities by facilitating the establishment of quality educational institutions.
