Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy asserted that the state government is bringing about a transformation in women empowerment in the state through various focused initiatives. He was present at the swearing-in ceremony of Telangana State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nerela Sharada at Buddha Bhavan on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said he was confident that Sharada, as the new Chairperson of the Women’s Commission, would play an active role in promoting women’s empowerment. He also reiterated that the Congress government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards women’s safety and will ensure safety of women at work, on roads and at home.
He highlighted several innovative schemes launched by the Indian National Congress government, highlighting that schemes like Mahalakshmi, Gruha Jyoti and Indirama House have collectively benefited millions of women. “Across Telangana, more than 1.4 million women avail free rides on TSRTC buses every day. The Mahalakshmi scheme has provided zero tickets worth about Rs 550 crore to women passengers, enhancing their mobility and independence,” he said.
Reddy pointed out that the Rs 500 cooking gas cylinders will benefit around four million women, helping each household save over Rs 700 per month. The Gruha Jyoti Scheme has provided up to 200 units of electricity free of charge to lakhs of households, significantly reducing expenditure. The Indirama House Scheme aims to provide housing to homeless poor families and has sanctioned 450,000 houses at a cost of Rs 22,500 crore in the first phase, with priority given to women beneficiaries.
The minister criticised the previous BRS government for neglecting women, highlighting that there was no woman minister during its first term. In contrast, the current Congress government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has two women in its cabinet. The minister cited the example of no woman minister from Telangana at the 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad, which was also attended by Ivanka Trump.
