Ahead of the Union Budget 2024, the report suggests that Lakhpati Didi 2.0 has the potential to significantly enhance economic independence for rural women.
In the interim Budget 24, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the “Lakhpati Didi” initiative, which aims to empower 30 million women, up from the initial target of 20 million, highlighting the massive impact of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which have 8.3 million members and 90 million women.
The finance minister emphasised the importance of focusing on the four “major castes”: “Galib” (the poor), “Mahilayan” (women), “Yuva” (youth) and “Annadata” (farmers). Their needs, their aspirations and their welfare are our top priority,” she said.
She said strengthening of Anganwadi centres would be promoted under the ‘Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0’ scheme to improve nutrition provision and early childhood care and development.

According to a Mint report, hopes are high for Lakhpati Didi 2.0 in Budget 24 to achieve a bigger impact beyond just generating revenue.
The report quoted Rosemoor director Ridhima Kansal as saying it was important to increase funding for digital literacy programs to help rural women seize the opportunities of e-commerce.
Ridhima Kansal also envisaged improving access to credit and microfinance and suggested integrating these efforts with programmes such as the National Rural Livelihoods Mission to ensure holistic economic engagement.
The report quoted Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Gradding.com, as saying the revised strategy has the potential to significantly improve women’s livelihood efforts. This can be achieved by promoting women-led cooperatives, strengthening their market presence and providing social security benefits for sustained economic stability, she said.
Pooja Choudhury, founder, Lavanya The Label, said the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ proposed in Budget 2024 will be a driving force for financial inclusion of rural women and can become an exemplary model for gender-inclusive economy initiatives across the world.
