MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) – The East Lyme police chief facing numerous criminal charges was scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday.
Police Chief Michael Finkelstein is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court.
The court appearance came just days after a refreshed internal investigation.
Finkelstein had been attending a voluntary rehabilitation facility out of state for the past three weeks and planned to return to Connecticut to continue the process of having the charges dismissed.
He faces five charges, most of which relate to several arguments with his wife that escalated into violence.
He applied for accelerated rehabilitation, which is essentially a program that allows defendants to take alcohol education classes.
If all goes well, the charges could be dropped.
A judge is expected to rule on Monday on whether Finkelstein should be accepted into the program.
That emerged in court while a new person was leading an internal investigation in East Lyme into how the arrest and police calls to Finkelstein’s home were handled.
State police had been investigating the incident but dropped the investigation last week.
The decision was made after the First Mayor spoke to the media about details of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Finkelstein continues to receive his salary while on paid administrative leave.
Lt. Michael Macek has been appointed acting chief of police for the East Lyme Police Department.
