Women’s empowerment is a reality at Elsevier – share my experience.


Developing talents you didn’t have before

Elsevier’s Gender Equality Leadership Talent Development Programme identifies promising leaders and equips them with undiscovered tools and skills to help them on their leadership journey. When the first cohort opened up in 2020 by application rather than recommendation, I wasn’t sure if I should apply.

Then I looked at the women around me and the many ways we all can exercise leadership and thought about what it means to be a leader. With the encouragement of my mentor, I successfully applied to the program and gained the confidence to take on leadership roles in multiple areas.

After nine years in Book Acquisition, I began a secondment in Research Analytics. I was exploring how I could develop leadership in a matrix career and started looking for ways to move between functions and departments within the company to develop my skills and experience. I became co-leader of the London chapter of Thrive, a gender equality network that has inspired me for some time. And now, from 2021, I have the honor of co-leading the global network, organizing events and representing the voice of gender equality within Elsevier and beyond. With 17 local chapters around the world, Thrive creates a platform for education and discussion on topics related to gender inclusion, provides global and local networking, mentoring and development opportunities, and fosters a deeper sense of community and belonging within Elsevier and the broader technology and publishing community.

By nurturing, celebrating and promoting our community of female leaders, Elsevier becomes a more dynamic, inclusive and creative place to work – by promoting each other, we promote everyone and succeed together.
