This year has seen the release of a ton of Marvel-related content, including series like Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Secret Invasion. Now, the superhero company is immersing fans in the world of “The Marvels,” a continuation of the story that began in the “Captain Marvel” movies, with the superheroine reprising her role as lead actress Brie Larson.
Sequels aren’t always the best idea for a movie franchise, but this one was great. It showcased the essence of girl power and a trio that will live on in the hearts of audiences for a long time. This sci-fi action movie is a treat for audiences who want to watch the adventures of powerful yet humorous superheroines.
At the start of the story, Carol Danvers once again encounters Marvel fanatics as she travels from the planet Hala, which was destroyed by the events of the previous film, and she soon finds herself facing off against the power-hungry new leader of the Kree, Durven.
Played by Zoe Ashton, she is a villain who quickly became one of my favorites on the list. Her performance was flawless and made the movie even better. However, the story continues, with more CGI and special effects that blow my mind, and Durven discovers two “quantum bands” on a faraway planet. The two combined give her the immense power she needs and the incredible ability to destroy various “jump points” in the universe.
Throughout the film, these “jump points” allow our heroines to come into contact with one another: in the scene where Captain Marvel fan Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) finally meets her idol Danvers, we again encounter superhero Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).
The witty and sarcastic remarks make these three incredible women a joy to watch in their moments together and their action scenes had my eyes glued to the screen.The cinematography and aesthetic of the film itself was a joy to watch.
Plus, when this trio of fantastical, badass female bosses try to stop Durven, there’s no way they’ll be beyond the reach of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s leader, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson. One thing that made me so happy about this movie was the beloved return of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie of Asgard. Her character shared key moments in the film and formed a beautiful friendship shared with Larson’s character, something I’d love to see more of in future Marvel movies.
The performances from Larson, Paris, Vellani and Lowe are superb, and the action scenes are impressive. The film is quirky but satisfying to watch, giving audiences a fun time and making a trip to the theater a worthwhile weekend getaway.
