Miss Kansas winner Alexis Smith has made headlines again after footage of her final interview during the pageant surfaced. She used the interview to speak out against domestic violence, stunning audiences by bravely calling out her abuser, who was also in attendance at the pageant.
After winning the Miss Kansas title last month, Smith decided to use her platform to campaign against domestic violence. Having spent most of her life surrounded by unhealthy and violent relationships, Smith is passionate about this issue. In fact, even on the night of her win, she couldn’t escape the influence of the abuser in her life. On an already stressful and emotional night, Smith was dealt an additional blow when her crazed abuser showed up to the pageant. Smith admitted that the abuser had been harassing her and trying to ruin the night. However, not only did Smith continue in the pageant, she showed incredible courage by denounceing her abuser from the stage.
Recently, Smith posted a video of her final interview after being crowned Miss Kansas, which quickly went viral.
In the video, she explained to the judges that her vision as Miss Kansas is to use her platform to “end unhealthy and abusive relationships,” and then she made a startling revelation: “In truth, some of you in this audience saw that I am very emotional because an abuser is here today, but that’s not going to stop me from standing on the Miss Kansas stage and representing them as the next Miss Kansas!”
“Before she finished her statement, the crowd was cheering her on for her incredible courage. Her abusers had come to the contest to harass her, but she continued, won, and publicly denounced them onstage in front of a packed house. You can only imagine how much strength it took for her to get through the night without ever losing her composure or her resolve to make a powerful statement against domestic violence.
She later provided further context on Instagram, acknowledging that the person she was “healing from” had unexpectedly shown up at the convention and “disturbed” her “peace.” But in that moment, she decided not to be silent. Her silence wasn’t just for herself, but for “all those who were watching and listening.” She wanted to turn her pain into purpose and use it in a way that “unifies and uplifts.” Smith ended by reiterating her commitment to using all the tools and resources available to her, as well as her voice, to support victims of abuse.
In an interview with KSN, Smith said all the women in her family have been affected by domestic violence, with the first abusive relationship starting when she was just 14 years old. It’s heartbreaking to think that she was emotionally abused, as even on the night of the competition, which was supposed to celebrate her talent, her abuser would show up to intimidate and harass her.
“The incident is a shocking reminder of the reality of domestic violence and how it often doesn’t end when a woman ends a relationship. Luckily, she was able to take some of her power back in that moment, boldly announcing that she wasn’t going to let her abuser take that moment away from her, earning the support of the entire cheering audience.”
