In 2012, the Assam Police set up a special task force to crack down on crimes against women.
They named it Veerangana (literally meaning “adventurer”) and decided to make it an all-female unit.
Initially, people ridiculed the idea. Police Commissioner Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told Brut:
Some law enforcement officials were skeptical: “Look at this guy. He’s trying to make clothes for girls, as if girls can make a difference,” they said.
Some didn’t see the need for a female contingent, and others doubted their abilities, but the women proved everyone wrong and kept on forging ahead.
Fascinating!

And they were so driven by their cause that no obstacle on their way could stop them.
These women come from diverse backgrounds and many have faced hardships in life, including sexism, sexual harassment and poverty.
One of the trainees, Kaberi Khatar, recounted the same story, telling Blut how his parents-in-law threatened to pour oil on him if he joined the unit.
They told me to get out of the room, there was a small window so I jumped out of it and left the house.
Although many in the world seem to be against these women right now, they find great support in each other.

The barracks is their safe place, the only place where they can be themselves without fear.
Veerangana is a unit of around 50 women who train commandos in weapons handling, hand-to-hand combat and maintaining control during domestic riots.
This is also the first all-female Silent Drill Commando unit in the country and we couldn’t be more proud of our trainees.
